Abstract: The thermal reactors, which are the majority of nuclear power plants worldwide, is being considered as a candidate to transmute the Minor Actinides (MAs) recycled from the spent nuclear fuel. Recent studies showed that MAs might function as burnable absorbers in fuel assemblies (FAs) since they possess noticeable thermal neutron absorption cross-sections. In this paper, we investigated the possibility of burning MAs as the burnable poison Gd in the UGD rod of the VVER-1000 LEU and MOX FAs. We replaced the Gd in the UGD rod with MAs by homogeneous mixing MAs with the fuel (called the U-MA rod). The U-MA rods will be then loaded in the LEU and MOX FAs instead of the UGD rods. The fuel enrichment and the content of MAs in the U-MA rods were varied and the infinite neutron multiplication factor (k-inf) of the U-MA rods was examined in relation to that of the UGD rod. Also, the k-inf of the LEU and MOX FAs with these U-MA rods were calculated and analyzed. Additionally, transmutation of MAs in the LEU and MOX FAs was evaluated.
